When the most famous playwright in the world comes from your town well, of course, you're going to make something of it. But there's more to Stratford than Shakespeare.

When the most famous playwright in the world comes from your town well, of course, you're going to make something of it. But there's more to Stratford than Shakespeare. Here are some ideas for the day trip.

Families with young children

Start off at . . .

Stratford Butterfly Farm is great for kids. They can see beautiful tropical butterflies feeding on pieces of fruit. They often alight on the visitors to much to the delight of the children. There is an insect city, loads of creepy crawly spiders and giant millipedes. Educational and fun.

Then head to . . .

The recreation ground nearby which has a sand play area, a paddling pool (unless the health and safety zealots have caused it to be filled in by the time you read this) lots of really fun play equipment and acres of grass for ball games. Take a picnic.

Start off at . . .

Paxton & Whitfield to stock up on cheese. The company has been around since 1797 with its Stratford shop a more recent addition to the firm. It's a lovely olde worlde shop with beamed ceilings and every cheese you could possibly ever want + crackers and bread to go with it.

Then head to . . .

The Minories just off Henley Street where you'll find Bensons House of Tea, award-winning specialist retailer of loose tea. There are over 80 varieties of loose tea and if you don't happen to own a teapot you'll find one here too.

And don't miss Hamiltons in Bards Walk for handmade chocolates and sweets.

Start off at . . .

Sheep Street. Stratford has numerous independent boutiques. If you like the Basler label head for the Basler Shop on Sheep Street at number 20. You'll find several other boutiques on Sheep Street and some menswear outfitters too.

Then head to . . .

Bridge Street, where there's a Jaeger shop, which carries the Jaeger London range

And don't miss out . . .

Aspire on Wood Street - it hasn't got a huge range but there's the occasional quirky gem. You'll find Gemini on Wood Street too which carries labels likes Hobbs and Fenn Wright & Manson.

Start off at . . .

Falstaff's Experience on Sheep Street. Walk up the cobbled path and you will instantly be transported back in time to the 16th century where you'll be transported back in time to learn about Stratford's famous, and not so famous, residents.

Then head to . . .

The Creaky Cauldron, Stratford's Wyrd Museum - at this venue you don't just watch the experience, you become part of it. Prepare to be scared!

Arts and antiques buffs

Start off at Whitewall Galleries in Sheep Street where you'll find modern art to buy.

Then head to . . .

Stratford Antiques Centre on Ely Street, especially if you're into Clarice Cliff and other art deco works. The centre is a maze of shops and antique stalls with everything from jewellery to clothing to knick-knacks.

Then go out of town to . . .

Stratford Antiques and Interiors Centre at Dodwell on the Evesham Road - a huge barn full of furniture, paintings, ceramics, beds, soft furnishing and garden ornaments. You won't come out empty handed.

And if you must do Shakespeare...

Start off at . . .

Shakespeare's Birthplace on Henley Street. There's no other way to soak up some of Shakespeare's spirit than in the house in which he was born.

Then head to . . .

Holy Trinity Church in Old Town where Shakespeare is buried (and don't forget to donate to the church fabric appeal!).
