RESTAURANT OF THE YEAR
This category is awarded to the restaurant that, in the judges' opinion, offers a sublime dining experience. It's not just that the restaurant of the year serves the most delicious and well-cooked food. Everything from the dcor, the service, the food, the wine list, and those little finishing touches that make dining out such a pleasure, will be judged for this prestigious award.
HOTEL RESTAURANT OF THE YEAR - NEW for 2009
We have introduced this new category to enable the numerous hotel restaurants to stand out from the 'stand-alone' restaurants. Once again we are looking for a sublime dining experience with fantastic food, drink and superb service. Tell us about the hotel restaurants that stand out from the crowd.
CHEF OF THE YEAR
The chef of the year is someone who has devoted him or herself to the cause of serving the best possible food. Technical ability, use of seasonal ingredients, presentation of the food, an understanding of how foods work together ... these are some of the things that are judged for this award which every Warwickshire chef covets.
PUB OF THE YEAR
Warwickshire is blessed with some brilliant pubs from the traditional country pub to the dining pubs. We are looking for the pub that offers its customers a real welcome with good food, well kept beer, ciders, perries and soft drinks. We'd like to know about the pubs that have a great wine list, a tasty menu, log fires, a nice garden, good views, a pub dog, a quiz team. Tell us about the pubs that are doing their bit to be the hub of the community.
FOOD PRODUCT OF THE YEAR
This is your chance to nominate the people behind the product. We expect this category to be highly competitive as Warwickshire is full of top quality food producers. We'd like to hear about farmers producing top quality meat or poultry or eggs or fruit and vegetables. We'd like to hear about the ice cream, the cheese, the pies, the cakes, the pickles, the jams, the juices ... in short food that's produced in the county that you think deserves an award.
DRINKS PRODUCT OF THE YEAR
Warwickshire has a wide range of drinks producers from real ale to cider and wine, tomato juice to apple juice, fruit liqueurs, country fruit wines, and, of course, Malvern spring water. Farmer's markets and farm shops are full of Warwickshire drinks and we'd like to know which is your favourite tipple.
BUTCHER OF THE YEAR
This is one of the most hotly contested categories of the awards, a testament to the large number of very high quality butchers there are in the county. Butcher of the Year gives you the chance to honour your local butcher. Does your butcher offer local meat? How is it hung, prepared, cut? Does your butcher offer advice on cuts of meat? Does your butcher offer you recipes? Tell us about your favourite.
BEST SCHOOL FOOD AWARD - NEW for 2009
This is a new award for 2008 and will honour those schools that have worked hard to improve the quality of their school food. We'd like to know about the range of menus served in schools. Has there been an increase in school meals? Children, tell us about your favourite school food. Does your school have a garden that provides vegetables or fruit for school dinners? Is food sourced locally? Is it organic? Please note that the closing date for the school food award (8th June 2009) is earlier than for other categories to allow our judges time to visit schools before the end of the summer term.
NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR
This award is open to anyone in the food and drink business who has started a new venture within the previous two years. It could be a shop, a farm, a new producer, a restaurant, pub, caf, tea shop. We are looking for innovation and flair - with a dash of localness thrown in.
BEST FARM SHOP/FARMERS' MARKET
Farm shops and farmers' markets have helped put local produce on the retailing map. We want to hear about the best farm shops and markets around the county. Are the products offered truly local? Are members of staff knowledgeable and helpful? Do shops and markets offer a wide range of products? Do they offer box schemes or home delivery?
TEA / COFFEE SHOP OF THE YEAR - NEW for 2009
We recognise that tea shops and coffee shops are an integral part of the Warwickshire food and drink scene and we'd like to know your favourites. Who makes the best tea or coffee? Is it tea bags or leaf? Is it instant or freshly ground? Who serves the nicest cakes or the best scones? Is the jam homemade are the sandwiches freshly cut? We're looking forwarding to hearing about your favourites.
OVERALL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
For the first time we are asking you to make your nominations for this award. The judges will be looking for someone who has worked tirelessly to promote Warwickshire food and drink, or an establishment that is leading by example in its use of ingredients from the county. Or the winner could be a food and drink writer or broadcaster who has promoted the cause of Warwickshire food and drink. Tell us who you think is a worthy winner.
