I always make a beeline to Trafalgar Square on any trip to London - home of the titans of art - but this time round I had an invite to an exhibition I wouldn't have missed for all the world.“I would sit very close and stare, sometimes looking so hard they would undergo an involuntary magnification.” Since studying for an art foundation in Bournville in the dark ages when I found my passion lay in painting portraits and nudes, I've been fascinated with Lucien Freud. I never got to meet my idol but last week I experienced the next best thing: Lucien Freud, Portraits at the National Portrait Gallery - the very last exhibition which he worked on before he died last summer aged 88 – he was still painting with a force to be reckoned with right until the end.
