The Secret Garden is set to make a summer debut at Playbox Theatre’s Dream Factory in August as the first in a planned three-year project to stage great musicals in Warwick during the summer months.

The stage musical is adapted from Frances Hodgson Burnett’s clasic 1911 novel by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Marsha Norman who has written both book and lyrics. The music is by Lucy Simon who was nominated for a Tony Award for the score when the show was produced on Broadway in 1991.

The musical is the coming-of-age story of Mary, an eleven-year-old living in British India who is forced home by tragedy. She finds herself in Yorkshire, England on the estate of her reclusive uncle, Archibald Craven. The story unfolds with a mixture of love, surprise and rebirth.

Playbox Theatre’s production of The Secret Garden marks the company’s return to staging diverse Musical Theatre works, the first since HAIR in 2010.

Head of Playbox Musical Theatre Juliet Vankay directs a cast of 34 led by 11-year-old Olivia Hass in the role of Mary Lennox and this is her first major role. Henry Edwards, Sophie Wheelans and Connor Parris also lead the company. The Musical Director is Richard Norris.

A spokesperson for Playbox Theatre said: “To stage a series of summer musicals in Warwick each year is a very exciting prospect for us at Playbox. Our opening show is a beautiful mix of tearjerking moments and gorgeous songs that we hope will be perfect as this summer draws to a close. Our Musical Theatre work has gone from strength to strength and our young artists making a huge impact. Tasha Chapple from Playbox is currently one of the ‘Matildas’ in the West End, so you see the calibre of artist we are training. The Secret Garden is the first in our planned annual summer musicals to include popular, iconic and not so well known works from the vast musical theatre collection. We will be able to announce next summer’s very shortly, once we have made the final choice from our shortlist. Summer is a perfect time of year to bring a musical event to our Warwick audiences.”
