Small and beautiful build for a young family

Sylva Group tells how its timber frame building provides dedicated work premises as well as additional living accommodation, giving a young family more space to work, rest and play at their Oxfordshire home.
When they bought an old farmhouse in Long Hanborough, the existing planning permission for a new home to be built in the garden inspired this ambitious couple to consult with local builders and timber frame company Sylva Group, and have a bespoke building designed to suit their needs.
With aspirations of an oak framed structure, the building was designed in brick and timber with internal oak features and oak cladding on the exterior to give the beautiful look and feel of an oak building without the associated costs.
Craig Strachan at Sylva Group explains: “Located just 7 miles from our office in Charlbury, this is one of our smallest and most local projects, and also one of our favourites.”
With a flourishing floristry business to accommodate, part of the build has been insulated specifically to maintain a stable temperature and humidity which helps the flowers stay fresh for as long as possible.
The building also features a double garage, providing place for cars and hobbies. Above the garage is a one bedroom annex complete with it’s own bathroom, sitting room and separate access via the external oak staircase, offering perfect accommodation for visiting guests.
Completed in 2012, the total build duration was just 6 months, a fraction of the time normally associated with standard blockwork construction.
