Nestled on the leafy boundary of Warwickshire and Coventry, you could be forgiven for not having heard of Sitting Firm.

Nestled on the leafy boundary of Warwickshire and Coventry, you could be forgiven for not having heard of Sitting Firm.

In fact, the traditional family-run firm prides itself on being the "best kept secret in English furniture".

Despite having a range of more than 500 products, offering bespoke tables, chairs and a wide range of cabinet furniture - and counting John Lewis as a customer of 15 years' standing - it has kept itself to itself.

Until now.

On the last weekend of April, Sitting Firm will open its first public showroom to showcase its traditionally hand-crafted furniture collection at The Old Saw Mill, in Harvest Hill Lane, Allesley, near Coventry.

The business was started by cabinet maker David Green in Balsall Common in 1989, crafting Windsor chairs.

David quickly found there was a niche for his products, took on more staff and introduced new pieces of furniture. Today, more than 30 people work for the company - which is still family-run - creating a range of hand-crafted and bespoke hardwood furniture for the more discerning customer.

"We moved to The Old Saw Mill about ten years ago. It is the perfect, central location for us, in the Warwickshire countryside in beautiful surroundings," explained Stephanie Green, who runs the business with her husband.

"The whole ethos of the business is based around quality and looking after people and I believe that is why we have such a highly skilled and loyal group of people working with us.

"They help us do everything here on site. After buying in seasoned timber, we do all the processes here, from steam bending and turning the wood, to crafting the pieces and finishing them.

"More so now than ever, customers know exactly what they want. They want to buy from a UK manufacturer. They want the materials to be from a sustainable source in the UK. They demand professional after sales service, and the reassurance of a lifetime guarantee gives peace of mind.

"We are proud to still be making our collection of solid, hand-crafted furniture in the UK. And, as a founder member of Woodland Heritage - an organisation dedicated to the welfare and renewal of the UK's natural resources of hardwood timber - our customers can be sure of our environmental credentials.

"Up to now, the work we have had has come through reputation. Over the years, we have produced bespoke and volume pieces for well-known brand manufacturers. But because we have sold mainly to the trade, we have not had our own brand presence. With this new showroom, we want people to see exactly what Sitting Firm does and why we have such a strong reputation for quality and individuality."

The showroom will be split into two distinct areas: traditional and contemporary. It will show a selection of furniture, some set up in whole-room displays so customers can see how they will look alongside other items. It will also have a new range of outdoor furniture.

Customers can tailor their purchase to their own needs, for instance, if they need a tabletop to be an inch shorter to fit their dining room, or to match a colour to an existing piece of furniture. It allows the purchaser to put their own mark on their purchase.

"It is this individual touch that customers especially like," added Stephanie.
