Though we live quite close by, wed never been to the Marriott Forest of Arden in Meriden. Its at the very heart of England, literally, but wed always connected the place with golf, rather than gastronomy.

The Restaurant was very appealing, with soft lightning and a smooth soundtrack running in the background without being obtrusive. Our table had a beautiful view of the golf course which led out towards glorious woodland.

I have to say that we felt quite overwhelmed by the wonderful service from start to finish. We felt like royalty, being waited upon so superbly by all the staff at Oaks Bar and Grill.

One of the things I immediately liked was the fact that the restaurant was comfortable and roomy, and not too close to the next table.

While considering the menu, we were presented with a gorgeous gazpatcho style soup and brushetta topped with brie and mint.

For starters I chose the Salmon & Leek Fishcakes, dressed Roquette, and tomato salsa, while Martyn went for Crab Tian, crispy filo, red pepper essence and sauce vierge. They were both delicious without being too much.

For the main course I decided on Pan Fried Calves Liver and Bacon, horseradish mash potato, red onion jus with a side order of buttered carrots. Martyn meanwhile went for one of his favourites - Pan Fried Sea Bass, grilled asparagus, caramelized salsify, wilted samphire and spinach.

Our most helpful waiter recommended a beautiful wine to complete the meal. We dont usually drink red wine, but the Louis Felipe Edwards Reserva was light fruity with a hint of berries. It was beautiful, and Martyn (whose favourite tipple is port) felt it was not far off the taste of a Ruby port itself with a soft delicate taste.

For desert I opted for the generous Cheese Board selection with a glass of port, while Martyn enjoyed the Rhubarb terrine with a coulis sauce...without the port, though he looked so crestfall, the waiter poured him a glass too!

The meals were simply outstanding, and all perfectly cooked, with each taste complementing the other. The food was presented so beautifully it was almost a shame to actually tuck in...but we did.

This is most definitely somewhere we will recommend to our friends and family - it would be an ideal venue for an intimate meal for two or a special occasion for the whole family.

Martyn was interested to note that the gentlemens toilets contained baby changing facilities...definitely a welcome sign of these modern times.
